Dark City Events is the collective banner for all events conceived and organised by established Edinburgh music promoters Jonathan Haynes, Julia Lile and James Lile. Jonathan (a.k.a. mr.SINister) and James (a.k.a. DJX) have been respected DJs on the alternative club scene for many years with numerous events under their collective belts, whilst Julia is well known as the manageress of Edinburgh’s Underground Nation shop on Candlemaker Row, which supplies a wide variety of alternative clothing, accessories and music.
The team’s headline event is the three day Dark City festival which began in 2004 and has quickly established itself as one of the UK’s leading annual alternative music festivals. Bands that have played Dark City include VNV Nation (2004), Fixmer / McCarthy (2006), XPQ-21 (2004 and 2006), The Mission (2004), Icon of Coil (2005), Rotersand (2005), Pride and Fall (2004), Panzer AG (2006), Clan of Xymox (2005) and Combichrist (2005 and 2006).
Ascension is one of Edinburgh’s longest running alternative nights. Beginning back in 1993 and initially held at the now defunct Cas Rock on West Portland Street, over the years the club has consolidated its reputation as one of the leading Alternative club nights in Edinburgh. Since moving to Teviot House in 2001, the club has gone from strength to strength, regularly attracting a wide audience from both Edinburgh and further afield.
With Edinburgh now firmly established as a must play destination for alternative artists, the team also promote numerous one-off live events allowing some of the scenes biggest names, including VNV Nation, Covenant, Assemblage 23, XPQ-21, Dream Disciples, Crüxshadows, Rossetta Stone, Nekromantik, Corpus Delicti and S.P.O.C.K the opportunity to reach one of the warmest and most enthusiastic audiences in the UK.
